All My Life, I’ve Had to Fight

I will say of the LORD, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” Psalm 91:2 NIV

I remember staying focused on the gun placed against my mother’s temple. She clung to my 4-year-old brother as she pleaded with my father, “Ted I love you! We love you!” My eyes never left the gun. He laid it on the table and snatched my brother from my mother’s arms. It was my only chance to grab the gun and run.

I was 9 years old. My mother, brother, and I had just moved to a new house in a new town. And my mother had met a new man. The day my father came to our house he yelled, “My kids ain’t gonna be raised by no white man!!” My mother’s new acquaintance was not white. He was, in fact, a very light-skinned black man. But my father intended to kill my mother anyway.

With the gun in my hand, I backed slowly toward the front door, unlocked it, and ran as fast as my legs would carry me down the road, the loaded gun gripped tightly in my right hand. My mother cried “Tonya, no baby!”
